"Dental Implants Net" is an information site aimed at providing a better public understanding and popularization of dental implants.
Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a type of therapy used to regenerate damaged periodontal tissue.
In cases in which the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament supporting the tooth have been damaged due to gum disease, etc., if left untreated, the periodontal tissue becomes thinner instead of regenerating. GTR is a method of regenerating damaged periodontal tissue to a condition as close to the original as possible.
Cleaning between the tooth and gum is performed to place an artificial special membrane between the residual periodontal ligament and gum or other tissue without mixing the both. This facilitates regeneration of the target periodontal ligament, and the periodontal tissue then becomes capable of supporting the tooth within several months.
Regeneration of periodontal tissue with this method may allow the placement of implants even in patients who cannot undergo implant treatment due to poor periodontal tissue incapable for supporting implants.
